Here is some general information about the grading system in First Grade:
  • We have a Standards Based Report Card.
    • 1 - The standard was NOT met
    • 2 - The standard was NEARLY met
    • 3 - The standard WAS met
    • 4 - The standard was EXCEEDED

  • You may often see two sets of numbers on your child’s paper - a percentage (%) and a 1, 2, 3, OR 4.
  • The percentage determines the Standards’ Based Score and is determined by the following scale:
    • 95 -100 = 4
    • 75 - 94 = 3
    • 65 - 74= 2
    • 0 - 64= 1
  • In certain cases, students can miss one problem and still receive a 4 score. This depends on the curriculum/subject, the content, number of problems, etc.
  • I am attaching a link to a website that I believe does a fairly good job of explaining Standards Based Grading: https://www.teacherease.com/standards-based-grading.aspx

Missing/Late Work:
If you are checking your child’s grades, and see a RED/ZERO, do not be alarmed at first. This can be there for several reasons:
  • Your child was absent and has not yet turned in the work.
  • Your child was absent, has turned in the work, but it hasn’t been graded yet.
  • Your child forgot to put their name on the paper and I’m trying to match up the papers OR they will have to redo it.
  • Your child forgot to turn in the paper, it’s still in their desk, and I’m hunting it down.
  • There can be other reasons, but these are the top few.

Please discuss with your child the importance of putting their name on their paper. I say 3 times “Put your name on your paper” for EVERY assignment and then we sing a Name on Paper Song. I do my best to match the paper to the student, but all No Name work is thrown away AFTER each quarter.

Dear Parents,
Please be aware that I DO NOT check my DOJO messages during the school day (8:30-2:30). I check them before school and after school. If you are sending me information that I NEED to know THAT DAY, please call the office and have Mrs. Ruth call my classroom. If the information isn’t important, you can send me a DOJO message and I will reply as soon as possible and in the order the messages are received.
I also have my DOJO message notifications set for personal Quiet Hours from 3:30 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. If you send messages to me during this time I am unlikely to respond; however, if I am on my phone or at my computer and have the time to answer your message, I am more than happy to do so.
Thank you.

Changes in transportation MUST be made through the OFFICE. Please DO NOT send me a DOJO message or an EMAIL notifying me of a transportation change. I often do not hear the DOJO beep or check email until after school. The office gets immediate notification and calls my classroom.

Dear Parents,
We have a mailbox in our classroom. We use this to help and build our writing skills. Parents are encouraged to write letters to their students ALL year long. It is especially fun for students to receive mail the first few weeks of school encouraging them to have a good year. You can address the letter as follows:

Your Child’s Name
c/o Mrs. Patterson
General Shafter Elementary
1825 Shafter Road
Bakersfield, CA 93313

Don’t forget to send me a photo of your child so I can add them to our class website. My DOJO still isn’t allowing me to download photos, so if you have ANY photos you want to share, EVEN ON DOJO, please remember to EMAIL them to me.
