Here is some general information:
  • ALMOST every weekly story from our textbook is a RC (RC – Reading Counts) quiz and can be found online in Think Central for you to practice reading at home.
  • SOMETIMES the Leveled Reader is also worth Reading Count points.
  • In my class, students are REQUIRED to take TWO quizzes every week, usually on Tuesdays and Fridays, but this can be affected by holidays, teacher absence, school events, wifi problems, etc.
  • Once they have completed their regular classwork, students are allowed to take extra quizzes during their “Free Choice Time.”
  • Students are given 3 chances to pass every book; after the third attempt, they are blocked from that book/quiz.
  • I can/will provide other RC books in my class for students to read and to use for taking quizzes. You DO NOT need to buy books for your students.
  • I give students plenty of time daily/weekly to read and take quizzes in order make their quarterly RC points.
  • Students can, and are ENCOURAGED to bring books from home; however, before a student brings a book to school, please use the class website and check to see if it is RC. Go to WEBSITES: Reading Counts and click on the link.
  • Based on the Reading Inventory test that every student took at the beginning of the year, students are placed in the BLUE GROUP  - which means that your child is required to earn 10 (TEN) points per quarter to meet their RC goal or they are placed in the GOLD GROUP - which means that your child is required to earn 20 (TWENTY) points per quarter to meet their RC goal.
  • The Reading Inventory is given EVERY quarter. When/if your child earns a Lexile score, they will then be moved to the GOLD GROUP. This group is required to earn 20 (TWENTY) points every quarter.
  • If you have any questions about our RC program, please feel free to ask.

The awards system for the Reading Counts Program has changed a little from previous years. Students will still receive an award for making their Reading Counts QUARTERLY Points, but the big PRIZE at the end of the year will now be based on their YEARLY POINT TOTAL and not on making their total EVERY QUARTER like we have done in the past. The Reading Counts flyer went home at the beginning of school. Regardless of whether you student is in the Blue Group or the Gold Group, the END OF YEAR TOTAL for all first graders is 80 points.

KEEP SCROLLING
If you need help finding out if a book is Reading Counts you can use this website.

PLEASE remember to check this link/website BEFORE sending a book to school with your child. Many students are coming to school having read books that are not Reading Counts. I love the fact that they are reading, but I don’t like disappointing them when I have to tell them the book is not a quiz.
